METHODOLOGY
This is a reading comprehension activity. Students read the biography of some women in Latin America and answer the questions in English. The women they will read about are important because of their achievements in different areas.
Once they have finished the reading, you can ask students why they think those women made a difference and ask them to do some research about key women in Irish history.
- Rigoberta Menchu
- Frida Khalo
- Las hermanas Mirabal
- Gabriela Mistral
PRACTISE YOUR SPANISH
- In groups, students could perform a short play in Spanish about the story of one of the women.
- Ask students to think of a woman who played an important role in Irish history or modern society and tell her story.
CONNECTIONS WITH IRELAND AND TAKING ACTION
After seeing the role of some women in Latin America, invite your students to explore the role of Latin American migrant women in Ireland. Encourage them to interview some of the Latin American women living in Ireland and talk to them about the challenges and opportunities they face. You can link with LASC to guide you on Latin American groups in Ireland.
