Guarani-Kaiowá Solidarity Ireland will be screening the award-winning documentary Martírio, which tells the story of the Guarani-Kaiowá indigenous people and their ongoing struggle to retake their ancestral lands.  Released at the 2016 Brasilia Film Festival, the film details the harsh and violent reality of indigenous peoples in Brazil by focusing on the resistance of the Guarani-Kaiowá ethnic group against powerful agribusinesses apparatus.  In the words of director Vincent Carelli, “Facing the tragedy of the Guarani-Kaiowá, it is clear that something must be done – and cinema is a powerful tool. I have not delved into the theme of violence against the Indians by personal interest, it is by imposition of events.”

The screening will be followed by a discussion facilitated by members of Guarani-Kaiowá Solidarity Ireland, a collective of citizens who stand with the oppressed indigenous people. Attendance is free but registration via Facebook is encouraged. Queries can be directed to t_mantovani@yahoo.com.br.
