Ládio Veron, our speaker at this year’s Latin America Week events, has called for observers to come to Mato Grosso do Sul, to help support the Guarani-Kaiowá in their struggle for land rights.
CALL FOR OBSERVERS FOR THE ATY GUASU

TAKUARA, STATE OF MATO GROSSO DO SUL, BRAZIL
The Ay Guasu (Great Council of the Guarani-Kaiowá) will be held from August 26th to August 31st, but we encourage observers to arrive on August 15th in Dourados and on August 16th in Takuara to set up the camp and prepare the event. Below is the entire program from August 15th to August 31st.
If you cannot participate in the entire program, just come when you can. But do try to be there on August 30th and 31st, because on those days international supporters will discuss cooperation projects with the Guarani-Kaiowá. Depending on the number and length of the projects, the ATY GUASU may extend one or two days, thus finishing on August 1st or 2nd.
COMPLETE PROGRAM
August 15 ARRIVAL IN CASA DA CULTURA (CULTURE HOUSE), DOURADOS, MATO GROSSO DO SUL
Casa da Cultura is near Dourados bus terminal. Address: Rua Monte Alegre,1908.
Sleeping is free at Casa da Cultura. Those who sleep there will help Fabiana Fernandes
to make breakfast and lunch, participating with €5 – €10 for food expenses.
August 16 ARRIVAL IN TAKUARA
The municipal bus leaves daily from Dourados to Caarapó at 9 am. Bust ticket: R$ 7.50
Upon arrival in Caarapó, a private car will take visitors to Takuara. Fee: R$ 10
Private cars might also leave from Dourados directly to Takuara. Suggested fee: R$ 15
August 16 -19 COLLECTIVE WORK TO BUILD THE ‘ACAMPAMENTO’ (CAMP)
Visitors will have a hands-on experience of what it is to make a camp and to live in it. Observers will work together with the Guarani-Kaiowá to build the camp to host the expected 400 attendants –counting both observers and Guarani Kaiowa- of the Aty Guasu. 80 barracks will be made from wooden poles, canvas, nails, wire, rope. On the back of each home a pit toilet will be dug.
August 22-23 KYR?GUE ATY (YOUNG PEOPLE’S COUNCIL)
In the Young People’s Council, young Guarani-Kaiowá will discuss their participation in the Guarani-Kaiowá struggle.

SUGGESTED FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTION PER OBSERVER/VISITOR
For people who stay for the whole program: € 50 for lodging + € 150 for eating = € 200
For people who arrive after the camp has been built: € 10/day for lodging + € 10/day for food = € 20/day
HOW THOSE CONTRIBUTIONS ARE USED:

The goal for this Aty Guasu is that all the observers that visit Takuara may contribute to finance the materials used to make the camp where both observers and Guarani Kaiowa people will sleep.
The total price for the 80 homes will amount to approximately R$ 9000 (€ 3000). The suggested contribution per observer/visitor is designed to cover those costs.
MEALS:
Observers and Guarani Kaiowa people will eat together. Some Guarani Kaiowa people will cook in exchange of some ‘food parcels’ that contain rice, beans, oil, wheat, sugar, tea, coffee.
The suggested contribution per observer/visitor will cover meals and cooking expenses, as well as any cleaning products, garbage bags, etc.
HOW TO GO FROM SÃO PAULO TO DOURADOS
For those who do not find rides in other people’s cars, there are buses and planes going to Dourados.
- By airplane: Planes leave daily from Campinas at 9:20 and 14:40 (flight lasts 1 hr 10 min)
- By bus: Buses leave daily from Estação Barra Funda (São Paulo) at 16:30, 18:40 and 21:30 – but they all arrive the next morning at the same time in Dourados, at 9 am!
- Cost of a one-way bus ticket ranges between R$ 205 and R$ 295. www.motta.com.br
