LASC's Approach to Development Education

  • LASC realises that Development Education is essential for effective campaigning and awareness raising and for exploring the links between the global and the local . LASC will provide the tools for analysis of the development issues raised, and encourage learners to participate in finding solutions to them, providing them with opportunities for action including the possibility of participating in LASC's campaigns.

  • Development Education helps LASC learn about, and raise awareness of, issues linking Latin America and Ireland, as we understand that the mechanisms that create inequality and oppression are global ones.

  • LASC’s development education initiatives include critical analysis of the macro and micro systems and structures that affect and link the people of Latin America and Ireland.

  • LASC believes in an educational process that places the learner at its centre. Therefore, LASC uses participatory methodologies in all education activities to promote the attitudes, skills and knowledge necessary to develop an active, aware and informed constituency for change.

Definitions of Development Education

Development Education is an educational process aimed at increasing awareness and understanding of the rapidly changing, interdependent and unequal world in which we live. It seeks to engage people in analysis, reflection and action for local and global citizenship and participation. It is about supporting people in understanding, and in acting to transform the social, cultural, political and economic structures which affect their lives and others at personal, community, national and international levels.
